The first leg of my first Nelson vacation involved driving many miles down hilly roads to spend a few hours in the hot sun digging for a bajillion year old fossils... and it was AWESOME!!!
Basically you go to this place out past Delta, Utah and they give you a hammer/chisel like thing and you go into a giant pile of rocks and just start splitting open chunks of Wheeler's Shale. If you're lucky a imprint or fossil of the ancient, underwater "cockroach" (that's what I call them but if you want to learn the facts about these ancient creatures, click here for the wikipedia page) will present itself for the first time in many years.
I and the rest of the Nelson clan got really into it and we all ended up with quite the collection of trilobites. Sadly we didn't find any of the $1,000 ones we wanted but we sure had a blast trying.
Literally mountains of rocks to be split open. These two kids are like my best buds now.
You are too fast. I won't have this posted for another month!
